  • For those of you early on in your intuitive eating journey, this letter writer lets us know that part of intuitive eating is learning that eating past fullness is uncomfortable, and therefore it just isn’t something we usually do when we have a healthy relationship with food. Sometimes we eat past fullness to be sure, it happens! But that isn’t the norm, and it doesn’t fill us with guilt anymore when we do eat past fullness.
  • Recovery takes time… it’s a marathon, not a sprint! Connecting to your body can feel unsafe or uncomfortable in early recovery, so be patient when trying to tap into your intuition.
  • Healthy eating includes flexibility!!
  • The only way to learn how to rely on your own hunger, fullness, and satiety cues is trial and error.
  • Intuitive eating = mindful eating = attuned eating.
  • You are allowed to eat things JUST BECAUSE. Unconditional permission to eat is a super important part of intuitive eating, but it can be the scariest!
  • Sometimes through intuitive eating we find that foods we were obsessed with during our disordered days are foods that we actually don’t even like.
  • There is often a mourning process when we let go of dieting because dieting sells us the lie of a perfect, happy life. But don’t avoid that grief! Feel what you’re experiencing, and remember that this feeling won’t last forever.
  • Seek out leaders in the body acceptance community to help you work through this grief.
  • The next step is embracing the social justice aspect of diets, and fighting for marginalized groups in the body peace movement.

  • Setting our own boundaries is SUPER important in trying to protect your own recovery.
  • The world that we live in isn’t one of body-positivity, HAES, and size acceptance. This means that when we pursue recovery, we are going against the vast majority of society, and sometimes that means our families. This makes the work harder to do, but it is that much more important!
  • Going against family dynamics is super hard, and when we actively follow our own path, it is common to feel pressure to go with the flow and back off of our own personal work in order to appease the family.
  • When we RECOGNIZE any emotion we are having, it automatically diffuses it and breaks its power.

  • We should spend our energy on keeping ourselves safe, setting our own boundaries, and focusing on ensuring that we are providing the best modeling for our own family in terms of having a healthy relationship with food.
  • Embrace self-compassion, boundaries, and self-care.

  • Intuitive eating can become another set of diet rules… don’t let it!
  • The foundation of intuitive eating is unconditional permission to eat.
  • We must help people build long-term resilience against the cultural crap! Self-care and personal connection are super helpful for our wellbeing, and we have to return to our well of wisdom and call upon a stable place of self-compassion to take care or ourselves and move past cultural expectations.
  • Intuitive eating is s different way of BEING with food. It’s peace. But it’s scary, and that’s okay!
  • Perfectionism and the all-or-nothing approach can get in the way of healing around food.
  • Fiona says, “Reassurance without assurance”… we will support you through the confusion!
  • HEALING YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO FOOD IS MESSY!! (Cultivate the mess!)
  • Although knowledge is important, it can take us away from living. It’s time to slow down and hone in on our intuition.

  • Eating disorder recovery has two steps: making peace with food then making peace with your body. Living in a fat body in our thin-obessessed world has many challenges especially if you are trying to live without diets and the desire to lose weight.
  • As making peace with food, it is common to not trust the process. Aaron uses a cool metaphor about being in the shallow end of the pool and knowing work needs to be done in the deep end. But going to that deep end is terrifying without floaties.
  • Remember to look how far you’ve come and be proud of the progress so far.
  • Binge eating disorder recovery is messy and not linear. It can be even messier if living in a fat body because our society undermines making peace with food. This chips away the trust we build through the process.
  • Do I need to learn to be a little bit hungry?? ABSOLUTELY not.
  • Honor the function of your rebellion. Deprivation will further fuel the rebellion.
  • We dietitians need to be comfortable with this rebellious time. Help clients hold the space.
  • Seek out people and resources that help you maintain positive body image. See the Food Peace Syllabus addition below.
  • Compassionate curiosity is the foundation for your food peace.
  • You cannot work on peace with food while pursuing weight loss.
