  • It’s January, and diet culture is EVERYWHERE! I worry a lot about the messages my kids are getting from these commercials and programs… Anna Lutz joins us today to talk about protecting our children from all the diet culture out there!!
  • There’s SO much of raising children that we don’t have any control over. There’s only so much we can do to protect our kids from so many things, from diet culture to bullying.
  • Instead of trying to control everything around your kid, focus on creating a foundation for your child to come back to when they’re confronted with diet culture.
  • Remember, we can do all the “right things,” but their genetics and personality can also play a role in how susceptible they are to diet culture.
  • We can’t change the way the culture perceives our kids’ bodies, but what we CAN do is support our kids in their home and give them a safe haven no matter what goes on outside.
  • Do what you can to talk positively about ALL bodies and talk neutrally about food. Model food and body peace the best you can!
  • Try to have consistent family meals where you can connect and communicate with your kids, and where you can model how to handle food in a neutral way. Research shows that this helps them to be resilient!
  • If your kids encounter fatphobia and tell you about it, start asking questions! Make them think about it, and start a conversation, rather than just trying to correct it. Help them to critically think!!
  • Remember, you’re raising the next generation! Who knows, maybe we’re making the first group of kids who don’t believe in weight bias and diet culture.

This one thing goes in every school lunch.

Right about when my kids start “sleeping in” until 8, it is time to send them back to school. I already miss the lazy days of summer!

This may surprise you: I too dread packing school lunches. 

Just ask my partner, Kevin, because he hears my complaints every night around 10 pm. I am tired and can’t fathom making another decision as I pack them each night. I could say I pack them with love (it is still there) yet it doesn’t look like that while I am packing them!

I am raising my kids to know no good or bad food yet school has quickly taught them the rules. We are managing somewhat to navigate this disordered eating world with open communication yet I still like to stay one step ahead.

My youngest started pre-k this year with a new-to-us teacher. Since I didn’t know her or her assistants yet, I decided to pack this note in his lunch box:


I appreciate child care providers have so much love in their hearts and only want our kids to be safe and healthy. Unfortunately, our fat phobic world and normalized disordered eating lead us to this common preschool lunch talk:

  • “Eat your growing foods first.”
  • “Make it a happy plate.”
  • “You didn’t eat your lunch so no dessert.”

I want to avoid teaching diets with every cell of my being. 

I know I can’t fully avoid them yet will face them as they come. I hope this lunch box note, from The Feeding Doctor Katja Rowell’s work found here, prevents some of the diet talk directed toward my youngest child. I have used this card before and have found them helpful.

  • 12 in 100,000 children have Type 2 Diabetes* yet 2900 in 100,000 children experience an eating disorder**. Statistically, worry more about eating disorders than increased adiposity.
  • Teach kids how to have a healthy body image and a healthy relationship with food.
  • Is fat a bad word? Let’s neutralize it. Just may be the key to positive body image and respecting others.

  • What to do about junk foods? Stop calling them junk and refer to them as fun foods because they are fun! Offer them a few times a week at a snack or as part of a meal.
  • Do you make your child go to the gym? No pain no gain = more body hate. Encourage movement that feels pleasurable. As a parent, our job is to help children to connect to the movement their body prefers.
